I attended a workshop yesterday and listened to a handful of speakers. I noticed a thread in every story in which each person reached some point in their life where they had achieved all of the status symbols and outward appearances of success. In each case it was at this point in their lives when they acknowledged how miserable they were which led to a total reexamination of themselves and the path they were on. Motivated by finally having enough, each person changed course, sometimes dramatically, and pursued a new personally chosen, more fulfilling path, driven by internal values instead of society’s values. “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.
Where there is a way or a path through the forest, it is someone else’s path. You are not on your own path. If you follow someone else’s way, you are not going to realize your potential.” – Joseph Campbell

p.s. if you haven’t read it yet, I added free PDF downloads of “As A Man Thinketh” to the website including a phone friendly version. It’s a 15 page book that will tell you how to grab the steering wheel of your life.

“On this path effort never goes to waste, and there is no failure. Even a little effort toward spiritual awareness will protect you from the greatest fear.” from The Bhagavad Gita
“No mirror ever became iron again;
No bread ever became wheat;
No ripened grape ever became sour fruit.
Mature yourself and be secure from a change for the worse. Become the light.” – Rumi
The bottom line is that any effort you take to improve yourself will not be a waste of time.
We must become independent of the good or bad opinion of others if we have any chance of progressing very far on our path. Deepak Chopra suggests a mantra to repeat multiple times a day: “I am totally independent of the good or bad opinion of others.” “I am totally independent of the good or bad opinion of others.” “I am totally independent of the good or bad opinion of others.” Steel yourself from being dependent on the opinion of others. Do what your soul commands you to do and leave it at that.
